How the tradition works
Two numbers, one name, one simple comparison
The Mulank comes from the day of the month alone. Born on the 23rd? Add 2 and 3, the Mulank is 5. The Bhagyank uses every digit of the full date, added and reduced the same way.
A name becomes a number too. In the Chaldean system every letter carries a value, the letters are added up, and the total reduces to a single digit. When that digit is friendly with both birth numbers, practitioners call the name a comfortable fit.
Spelling matters, which is the part most parents find surprising. Advik and Advick give different totals. That is why families often test two or three spellings of a name they already love.
Sound, meaning and family feeling come first. The numbers are a tiebreaker, never a rulebook.

Many families are given a starting syllable at the naamkaran. It comes from the janma nakshatra, the lunar mansion the Moon was in at the moment of birth, and it needs the exact birth time and place to calculate.
