What Guna Milan actually measures

Guna Milan is the scoring half of Kundli Milan. It compares the Moon sign and birth Nakshatra of two people across eight categories, the Ashta Koota, and each category carries a different maximum number of guna. Added up they come to 36, which is where the familiar “out of 36” figure comes from.

The number on its own is a starting point. Two of the eight koota, Nadi and Bhakoot, hold 15 of the 36 points between them, so a single mismatch there moves the total far more than the other six combined. That is why a score should always be read alongside which koota lost the points.

Nadi Dosh
Both partners share the same Nadi. It carries the largest single block of guna, 8 of 36, so a Nadi match costs more points than any other mismatch. Classical texts list several cancellations, including the same Rashi with different Nakshatras.
Bhakoot Dosh
An unfavourable distance between the two Moon signs, worth 7 guna. Traditionally associated with friction over money and household harmony rather than with the relationship itself.
Manglik Dosh
Mars placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. It is checked separately from the 36 points, not as part of them, and many classical conditions cancel it, including both partners being Manglik.

Is a 36 out of 36 score good?

It is extremely rare and not automatically ideal. Some classical astrologers treat a perfect score with caution because it usually means the two charts are near-identical, including in their weaknesses. A balanced score with no major dosha is generally preferred to a perfect number.

What if the Gun Milan score is low?
