The eight Ashta Koota, and why the score is out of 36

Kundli Milan compares two birth charts across eight categories, called the Ashta Koota. Each category carries a different maximum number of guna, or points. Added together they come to 36, which is why compatibility is always quoted as a score out of 36.

How to read a Gun Milan score

The number is a starting point, not a verdict. Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most guna between them, so two charts can score reasonably overall and still show a specific dosha worth understanding. What is Guna Milan?

Guna Milan is the point-scoring part of Kundli Milan, the classical Vedic method of checking marriage compatibility. It compares the Moon sign and birth Nakshatra of two people across eight categories called the Ashta Koota, and awards a score out of 36. It is the most widely used compatibility check in Indian matchmaking.

What is a good Gun Milan score out of 36?

Traditionally, 18 and above is considered acceptable, 25 and above is very good, and 33 or more is rare and excellent. Below 18 is usually not recommended without a full chart review. The score alone is not the whole picture: Manglik Dosh, Nadi Dosh and Bhakoot Dosh are checked separately and can matter more than the raw number.

What is a Nakshatra?

A Nakshatra is one of the 27 lunar mansions that divide the zodiac in Vedic astrology. Your birth Nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. Each Nakshatra is further divided into four Padas, or quarters. Nakshatra is used for naming, for marriage matching, and for calculating Dasha periods.

What is Manglik Dosh?

Manglik Dosh, also called Mangal Dosh or Kuja Dosha, is the placement of Mars in certain houses of the birth chart, most commonly the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th. It is traditionally considered a factor in marriage timing and compatibility. Many classical conditions cancel it, which is why a full chart reading matters more than the label.

Do I need my exact birth time to use these tools?

Date of birth is the minimum. Birth time matters most for anything involving the Lagna, or ascendant, because it changes roughly every two hours. If you are unsure of your birth time, use the closest time you know and treat time-sensitive details as approximate.
